Maties and NWU-Pukke will face each other for the third time this season in the Varsity Netball Final in Stellenbosch on Monday.
The first time the two teams met the match ended in controversial circumstances when loadshedding struck in Potchefstroom with the match evenly poised at 34-32.
After much deliberation it was decided that there would be a rematch on neutral territory, so the teams squared off in Port Elizabeth where Maties managed a slender 46-39 victory.
Both teams went on to play away semifinals having ended third and fourth on the standings respectively, and both managed remarkable victories in those play-off matches.
Last year Maties lost to UP-Tuks in Pretoria and NWU-Pukke went down to Kovsies in Bloemfontein, but this season the tables were turned in replays of those same semifinals.
Maties have been one of the form sides all season, and ran UP-Tuks very close when they squared off in Round Two.
They have lost just two matches all season and put in a clinical performance at the Rembrand Hall to secure a home final.
NWU-Pukke have been less convincing this season, which makes their semifinal performance against the previously unbeaten Kovsies all the more impressive.
There is never much love lost when NWU-Pukke face Kovsies, and the Potchefstroom students certainly rose to the occasion to knock the two-time champions out.
This sets up what should be a clash of the underdogs, with Maties taking part in their first-ever final and NWU-Pukke looking to go one better than in 2013 when they finished runners-up.
There will be new champions crowned in Varsity Netball this season, and whether it is Maties or NWU-Pukke, there is no doubt that they will deserve that title.
