First National Bank is a proud sponsor of Varsity Sports, a high-performance competition platform that enables South African universities to compete against one another in a number different sporting code. These codes are athletics, hockey, cricket, football, beach volleyball, 7s rugby and netball. Established in 2009 and administered by Cape Town and Sandton-based Advent Sport Entertainment & Media (Pty) Ltd (ASEM), Varsity Sports is the exclusive service provider (via a 10-year multi-media rights agreement) to the University Sports Company (USC), whose objective it is to administer, develop, co-ordinate and promote non-professional sport between higher education institutions in South Africa.

The defending Varsity Netball champions retained their title, seeing of a spirited Tuks effort, in a final that went down to the wire in Pretoria on Monday evening. Each team scored off of each other’s first centre passes as both teams were eager to impress in the opening encounters. Long passages of play from both […]

In 2007, FNB embarked on a journey as a national supporter of the 2010 FIFA World Cup™. From the outset it was clear that FNB wanted to be more than a sponsor of this landmark event in South Africa - we wanted to ensure that the South African youth benefit from this event. In the build-up to the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, FNB and the relevant municipalities worked together to build five artificial pitches in Pietermaritzburg, Mthatha, Thohoyandou, George and Kimberley. In May 2011, FNB introduced the FNB Football First Programme to all these venues by appointing three coaches to each pitch. Since then, the coaches have been hosting daily development clinics and training sessions to the youth from the community. Each year thousands of children's lives are impacted positively through the programme, because it not only helps them develop their football skills, it also provides a safe environment for them to spend their free time after school. Some graduate into their regional teams selected to participate in a national festival held in Johannesburg annually. This festival has become a scouting ground for national and club selectors alike with players being drafted into club academies and national teams as a result. FNB's proud heritage of supporting youth sport lives on through the FNB Football First Programme. FNB believes that this platform is essential to the involvement of young children in sport.

Yesterday FNB celebrated five years of successfully developing and nurturing young gifted football playing boys and girls from grassroots level, to Under 13 and Under 15, through its FNB Football First Programme.   The programme was founded as a legacy project following FNB’s involvement in the 2010 FIFA World Cup™. Since its inception in 2010, the programme […]
